Female Hair Loss Treatment – Hormone Replacement Therapy

by on August 5, 2014 in Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss can terrorize women the same way it can on men. The thing is it can be more nightmarish to women than to men. Women are just way vainer when it comes to hair grooming – and they get down to anything just to keep it beautiful and intact. Good thing is, female hair loss treatment is now available through the Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which is common among women, especially menopausal women.

How Women Go Bald

It is generally perceived that there are more men than women who go bald. Although nothing can be further from reality, women—especially those in their 60s—cannot escape the harsh fate. When hormonal imbalance happens, hair loss happens.

Basically, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone derivative female pattern baldness. DHT destroys the hair follicles, thereby shedding the normal hair. Testosterone is a male hormone but women still produce this hormone in the adrenal glands and ovaries, albeit at lower levels. Female hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone, on the other hand, resist DHT build-up. This is the reason more men experience balding.  Yet even low levels of DHT could cause thinning hair or hair loss in women.

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Female Hair Loss Treatment

HRT is a treatment for hair loss involving estrogen and progesterone prescription. Physicians typically endorse this female hair loss treatment to menopausal women. This is because at menopausal stage, hormone production slows down. When hormone count decreases, women may start losing their hair. During menopause, women mostly complain about pain in combing the hair.

Estrogen and progesterone complement each other. If estrogen is prescribed alone, it can increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Progesterone lessens the estrogen effect.

However, this type of female hair loss treatment can have its own disadvantages. Prolonged use of this estrogen and progesterone medication can increase the risk of breast cancer, stroke, blood clots, and urinary dissoluteness.

If HRT is not a good idea, you may consult a specialist for other female hair loss treatment alternatives that you think will suit you best. There are other medications and modes of female hair loss treatment, such as minoxidil, laser therapy, surgical and non-surgical hair replacements.
