Today, many hair loss products claim that they are the answers to your problems on hair loss. They are flooding the market that you can no longer distinguish which one is right for you. The truth is most of these products have two things in common: (1) the active ingredients present in them and (2) the type of hair loss they treat which is the most common type of hair loss terrorising almost half of the world’s population – Androgenic Alopecia.
Minoxidil. Minoxidil is an FDA-approved synthetic drug proven to reverse the progress of baldness. Hair loss products such as Rogaine, Avacor, and Loniten trade Minoxidil in 2% concentration for men and 5% concentration for men either as an oral (Loniten) and topical (Avacor) solution.
Only those with Androgenetic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata respond to Minoxidil treatment. It serves as a vasodilator which means it enlarges the blood vessels to increase blood supply in the scalp. An increased blood supply to the hair follicles makes hair restoration possible.
Finasteride. Finasteride is an oral prescription drug that stops hair loss because of its anti-androgenic properties. In fact, it has always been prescribed for an enlarged prostate. This drug arrests the main culprit of pattern baldness which is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) build-up. Specifically, it blocks Type 1 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that causes male pattern baldness. Propecia, one of the hair loss products in the market, trades Finasteride.
Dutasteride. Dutasteride is another prescription drug present in some trade names such as Avodart. Dutasteride works on the same mechanism as Finasteride. Only that Dutasteride is believed to be more effective because it inhibits the two types of 5-alpha reductase.
Spironolactone. Spironolactone is another oral medication with anti-androgenic properties. However it is only commonly prescribed to women because of its potential effects on men (e.g. lower sex drive, impotence). Physicians often recommend this to those with hyper-androgenic symptoms present besides scalp hair loss, such as facial and body hair loss, acne, erratic periods, or excessive skin oiliness.
Saw Palmetto is a natural ingredient which works similarly as Finasteride. Unlike Finasteride, Saw Palmetto inhibits the two types of 5-alpha reductase, and thus it is said to treat pattern baldness more effectively than Finasteride. Saw Palmetto is the active ingredient on some hair loss product treatments such as the Leimo Hair Treatment Pack.
Before you get put off by bad reviews about a hair loss product you thought about buying, you need to understand whether it is applicable to you in the first place. If you are diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia or Alopecia Areata, then you can choose among those hair loss product treatments above.
Causes of hair loss can vary and so are the hair loss product treatments; types of hair loss product treatments can vary and so are the active ingredients present in them. Therefore, some people may not have the same response or may not even respond at all to the same treatment.
