Hair Restoration: What You Need to Know

by on June 30, 2014 in Hair Regrowth

Technically defined, hair restoration is the process of treating various cases of hair loss. This may come in form of surgical (invasive) or non-surgical (non-invasive, topical) treatments: from medical to herbal.

There are different ways to help restore your strands, and picking the right therapy is key. To know what the right treatment is for you, it is best to consult your doctor. If you opt to go for the non-invasive treatments, make sure that the products you use are highly effective and beneficial.

Let us explore more on the different invasive and non-invasive methods of hair restoration.

Invasive Hair Restoration Treatments

Surgical procedures of hair restoration are extremely expensive but it provides greater and more permanent results compared to the topical, non-invasive therapies. Generally, this involves moving of the scalp tissues that contain hair follicles from a part of the head and then transplanted into the thinning or balding areas of the scalp, to make way for new hair growth.  A hair restoration like this can ordinarily range from $4,000 to $20,000. However, the cost of hair restoration greatly depends on how many grafts you need or how many sessions you have to finish.

Non-Invasive Hair Restoration Treatments

There are various forms of non-surgical hair restoration methods, which help in hair regrowth as the chemicals help expand the blood vessels in the scalp and promote cell proliferation, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth. One example includes Minoxidil. It comes in 2% and 5% solutions for women and men, respectively. However, this hair loss treatment includes side effects such as itching, inflammation and redness of the scalp. Once the usage is stopped, hair regrowth stops as well.

Another non-invasive hair restoration treatment includes Finasteride, the first ever widely accepted and FDA-approved hair restoration oral medication for men. Finasteride directly targets the cause of hair loss which is DHT or dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This drug effectively blocks the conversion of the hormone testosterone into DHT. It slows down the hair loss process and promotes hair regrowth. Like Minoxidil, side effects of Finasteride in men include erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, testicular pains, decreased sex drive, and abnormal ejaculation including decreased ejaculation amount. Finasteride is strictly prohibited for hair restoration in women, particularly the pregnant and lactating women, for this is proven to cause negative effects on a fetus.
